Policies & Rules

Refund Policy

All net proceeds go to charity; there are no refunds. 

There are no refunds - no exceptions - no person to person transfers. You are not allowed to give, sell or trade your registration to another person.
Active military may receive a refund by submitting order papers via email (info@obxse.org) or fax (252-261-6296). 

Course Policy

No bandits (non-registered participants), strollers, bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, wagons or pets allowed on the course. You will be asked to leave the course by officials along the way.

Strollers are permitted for the  Fun Run course only and must be staged at the back of the other runners. Strollers are not allowed on the 5K Course.

Race numbers, timing chips and participant t-shirts must be picked up at the Expo and will not be mailed.

Runners and walkers will be staged in corrals at the Start, based on predicted finish time. Walkers are required to stage at the back of the Start.

Wave starts will be implemented for both the marathon and the half marathon races.  This is a requirement from Dare County public safety officials.  If you are competing, you may start in the first wave.

TowneBank Outer Banks Marathon walkers must maintain a 16:00 min/mile pace in order to meet the course time limit and "beat the bridge" at mile 22 before it closes to race participants at 1:30 PM. There will be 2 check points to insure this pace.
1. mile 3.5 cut off time is 8:30am
2. mile 13.1 cut off time is 11:00am

The TowneBank Outer Banks Marathon, and Half Marathon courses are point-to-point. The elite/fastest marathoners will pass half marathoners on a mutual part of the Marathon course. Half marathoners and walkers must give marathoners the right of way, and should stay to the right of the road.

Runners will use the Chronotrack B-Tag system.  No other timing chip may be worn.  B-Tags must remain on your race bib to receive a finish time and be eligible for awards.  

Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) recommends against the wearing of headphones in races.  The RRCA also urges extreme caution in any use of headphones in training or routine running.  Our participants must consider the safety of themselves and others in deciding to use headphones.
Runners using headphones/earbuds are required to stay to the right of the course allowing faster runners to pass them on the left.

Wheelchair Event Rules

Rim chairs are allowed at the November Half Marathon only.
Mechanical gears or levers shall be allowed, which may be used to propel the chair.
Only hand-operated, mechanical steering devices will be allowed.

Hand crank cycles or chairs are NOT permitted.  Exception:  participants not interested in being timed, can ride the course as an Exhibition race.

Late Registration

If the race you are interested in has not reached capacity there may be registration available on Friday or Saturday at the Expo Registration Booth. There is No Race Day Registration available for the Marathon or Half Marathon.

Marathon and Half Marathon and Southern 6  Late Registration Event Shirt:
Event shirts are in limited quantities and sizes. Late registrants may be able to pick up an event shirt at the OBSE retail area on Sunday, in Manteo at the Post Race Party. Please present your t-shirt tag found on your bib.
Sizes and quanities are not guaranteed.

8K - 5K - Fun Run Late Registration Event shirts will be available to pick up after the race at the Runner Expo. Please present your t-shirt tag found on your bib.
Sizes and quanities are not guaranteed.

Shirt Swapping: Each pre-registered runner will recieve the shirt size they requested during online registration.

  • Swapping out shirts MARATHON, HALF MARATHON AND SOUTHERN 6 will be allowed on Saturday at the Runner Expo after 5:00 or 1 hour prior to the EXPO closing as well as at the Retail area at the Post Race Party following the event. Return you unworn event shirt to swap. There is no guarantee for shirt size or availability.
  • Swapping out shirts FUN RUN, 5K AND 8K will be allowed on Friday at the Runner Expo 1 hour prior to the EXPO closing Or at the Runner Expo on Saturday after the race. There is no guarantee for shirt size or availability.
  • Challenge participants will be allowed to swap the 5K/8K cotton shirt on Saturday at the Runner Expo after the race. There is no guarantee for shirt size or availability.
    Challenge participant FULL/HALF Tech shirt swap is allowed Saturday 1 hour prior to the EXPO closing as well as at the Retail area at the Post Race Party following the event. You must return your unworn event shirt to swap. There is no guarantee for shirt sizes or availability.
